While I was in Tacoma and Seattle a couple weeks ago, I took some time to tour the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit. Dale Chihuly is a glass artist who was born in Tacoma, went to undergrad at the University of Washington and attended grad school at the University of Wisconsin at Madison where the first glass program was held. I’ve always been drawn to glass, whether it’s a glass vase, a glass sculpture, or a building made up of glass windows. I love Chihuly’s work in particular because of the diverse shapes and bright colors.
The exhibit started with the Glass Forest. These tall, thin, glass structures were made by Chihuly and his team standing on ladders while allowing the hot glass to slowly drop to the floor.
The walls, floors, and ceilings of each room housing the exhibit were painted black so the colorful sculptures were amplified. Some of the sculptures, like this one, The Mille Fiori — Italian for “a thousand flowers,” were displayed on a mirrored platform.

The Glasshouse: a 4,500 square foot glass and steel structure housing the 100 foot red, orange, yellow and amber installation—Chihuly’s largest suspended sculpture.
